FLGeoWeek 2024
Celebrating Milestones

Welcome to Geography Awareness Week 2024!

Celebrating Milestones was inspired by the bicentennial celebration of our state’s capital, Tallahassee. This past weekend, the city commemorated the event with the dedication of the replica first capitol building located at Cascades Park which is very near the original location of the capitol. This story has a unique historic geography story that all Floridians should know.

We are challenging teachers to not only share the Tallahassee story but to engage their students in the exploration of a milestone in their community too! Any important date, place, person or thing that is considered a pillar of the community would work, we are also encouraging the study of historic places such as ghost towns or cemeteries as relics not to be forgotten. Every place has a history, and we want to see the development of many historical geography projects during this school year! This event inspired us to continue our exploration of community and Florida culture, and we want to encourage teachers and students to celebrate not only our state capital’s anniversary but local community milestones too.
